Post by email

  • I am trying to set up a post by email category, my hosting provider is Dreamhost. I’ve had zero luck getting this to work. I’m not sure what to do. I’ve created the “secret” email and specified the correct login info and pop3 server. I’ve left the port with 110. It just doesn’t work.. the email account recieves the email but doesn’t get to wordpress.

    I’ve verified many many times over that my login info is correct and am totally out of ideas. Can anyone help me with this? Better yet, is there any Dreamhost users who have gotten this to work?

  • Same issue here with WP 1513.

    You might try upgrading to 1.5.2. When I did all my test email posts that didn’t work magically appeared. Go figure.

    OK, Tom. I guess that I’ll need to upgrade. I’m reluctant to do it, as I don’t want to screw-up any plug-ins.

    Do I need to setup a cron job?

    You either need a cron job, or to manually load wp-mail.php.

    Or you can try Skippy’s wp-cron plugin.

    Cron job works for me on Dreamhost.

    I got the cron job set up pretty easily, much to my surprise! For testing purposes, it checks every 3 minutes. I’ll change that once all works OK. Here’s my problem now:

    Take a look at the post titled “Test” @ https://blog.maltese.net

    Using Outlook, I used the text “test post disregard” in the body and look at how it came out. Any ideas? Looks like a problem with the php script. It added the word “message”, line breaks, etc.

    Might be mail client oddness. Are you sending in plain text?

    That’s almost certainly due to your email client. Send only plaintext eamails to your blog-by-email account.

    You folks were correct… I was not sending in plain text. All is well. I love this forum’s support and caliber of people.

    Is anyone posting-by-email from your cell phone/blackberry? If so, pictures too? Moblog… found some links here in the forums search, but would like to see more examples of moblogging with WP.

    Your request is the very reason that I setup posting from email, so that I could blog with pictures from my camera phone. I have searched everywhere for an easily configured plugin to accomplish this to no avail. The best that I could do is email pictures from my phone to flickr and it “co-posts” to the blog. I’m not crazy about it.

    Anybody have a solution for me and Dgold?

    This page used to contain a wp-gmail plugin which was written specifically for moblogging. The page doesn’t load for me any more. You could try Google’s cache for the page, as well as a cached copy of the plugin.

    I’ve not used this, so I don’t know if it works.
