Post columns and latest post

Hi! I know this should could be quite simple but I just can’t seem to find anything on it and I don’t know how to do it.

What I want to do is have 2 columns of posts on the homepage, and I did so by following this tutorial : https://perishablepress.com/press/2008/08/04/two-column-horizontal-sequence-wordpress-post-order/

But now what I want to do is at the top of the homepage add the latest post that isn’t in either of the columns but is at the top on it’s own, like a featured post, but I don’t know how to combine all of this and to add the latest posts….
