After upgrading to WP2.6 my posts don’t increment by 1 each time.

I make a post, lets say post 1290. Then next post is post number 1292. Next is 1294. I paused for a few minutes and the next post I made was 1298. Next post after that was 1302 with a 10 minute wait.

I am the only user. No drafts waiting to be published. No extra files if I had been hacked.

    Yes, I did a search.

Is this normal or is there a problem ?

    Thank you.

Don’t worry about it. I’m going to ignore the problem. I don’t need my blood pressure going up over the snotty posts in this forum.

Ok, I have nearly the same prob. Between the 09.02.2009 (Post Nr.: 585) and the next one on the 27.06.2009 (Post Nr.: 1220) are 635 countings upward… why? How can I stop this or change it?

Thank you for your help and sorry for Sam, I can understand his impatience – the counting s***s. Please help!

The posts table holds posts, revisions, attachments so control of the post id is kind of useless.

    But look at https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/revision-control/

Michael, thank you for your really fast answer ?? My main problem is, that I don’t know, how wordpress comes from the lower to the higher numer in just one post. Does the post-counts increase with comments, pages and so on? Then, everything is fine…

Yes forgot to mention pages also uses up POST IDs. Comments are in their own table. Use phpMyAdmin to look at your posts table (e.g. wp_posts).

zaph0d: Every post has at least 1 autosave revision, which is updated every 2 minutes while you’re writing the post. Thus the extra number.

Post ID was never intended to be a post counter. It’s an identifier only. It’s unique, and it’s subject to change. If you export the blog and reimport it to another blog, all the ID’s will get altered.

This was also why the ID number column was removed from the posts and pages listings. It’s not supposed to be significant in any real way. It’s just a number. It could be entirely random, it has no real meaning.

Ah, thank you very much! I thought that there was something completly wrong with my installation, some server-damaging uber-problem, counting itself through space and time. But now the skies are blue, the grass is green and the sparrows are singing again ?? great! Thank you again, Michael and Otto!
