Post Formats vs. Page Templates? WHY the difference?

    Why are page templates and post formats different?

    I prefer all my pages and posts be visibly the same. So if I create a special “type” I have to do that twice, once to create the “format” for posts, and once to create the “template” for pages.

    Is there a plugin that unifies these? Is there a reason why they are separate? What if I want to apply a post format to a page?
