Post Order

I notice lately that if a post is updated it goes back to the top like a new post. The date doesn’t change, however it shows back on the top of the list of post. I would think just by updating the post it should not affect the sort order as the published date was not changed.
Please let me know if this something maybe I’m doing wrong in the shortcode. Here is my shortcode:
[nlposts number_posts=6 title_only=false thumbnail=true paginate=true posts_per_page=6 excerpt_length=50 sort_by_date=true sorting_order=newer auto_excerpt=true sorting_limit=20 full_meta=true thumbnail_wh=600×200 css_style=mycustomcss]
