Post published dates are in UTC not EST

  • Running the Sixteen theme.

    On the top of each post it says “Published xx hours ago” and the time is based on UCT not EST.

    I have EST (UTC-4) in my WordPress dashboard options.

    Lots of Google searches have come up with similar issues. Fixes range from:
    — Update .htaccess file to put the correct timezone in
    — Change the MySQL time to be EST
    — change the php.ini file to force the timezone

    Since the “Published xx hour ago” seems to be a theme thing, I’d like to fix it in the theme (otoh, if one of the above fixes is better, tell me and I’ll do that).
