• For purposes of helping to avoid the appearance of duplicate content (from search engines point of view), I read a suggestion that said to make the recent posts on the blog home page just snippets with the Permalink to the entire article. The article suggested that having a post on the home page, on a page that the permalink leads to, and in the archives could create duplicate content issues.

Is this a good suggestion? Are people doing this?

Unless I see evidence to back up this claim, I’d consider it just someone’s personal preference turned into a SEO rule of thumb ( :p ).

Yes some people do it, though the percentage of those doing it for the purpose of improving on search engine lovin’ is probably small. A more typical reason is to minimize the ‘scroll factor’ on pages with more than a few posts, especially if ones writing tends to lean towards the verbose.
