Posting as Admin (with Nickname). Is it a security risk?

  • I know in the past, posting as an admin was a big no no, because hackers could easily see the username and start their exploits.

    However, since the new version of WordPress now has nicknames, is it still a risk posting using the admin account? Or is it safe, as long as you declare a different nickname?

  • The problem with the ‘admin’ username is that it is easy to guess since that username was installed automatically until recently. If you guess the username you’ve passed half of the security check. See? Now, whatever your nickname is, you still login with the username– admin– so just having it on the system is a risk. The nickname really doesn’t matter in that case. Picking a username other than admin and then using a nickname to hide that username would probably give you a bit more security, though.

    Thanks for the response mate. I’ve changed my username to be something different, and I’m using a nickname too.

    I guess a better question to ask would be is the username is ever displayed to public, when a nickname is set?

    That depends upon what then user has set as his/her display name in their profile.

    If you set the display name to be the nickname. Will it ever show the username anywhere on the blog?

    In theory, no but that doesn’t take into account a theme or a plugin incorrectly accessing and displaying the username instead of the display name.

    Gotcha. I won’t be using another theme, so should be all good for now.
