• Hi, first post, and I am asking because I can’t find a straight answer just yet.

Ok, so far Word Press was easy enough to set up, I’ve added in a few templates, and I’m happy… but here is my question.

I have three theoretical sections I want to talk about.

    1. Computer
    2. Family
    3. Friends

Can I create a Page, and then post topics/posts on those pages, or is each page its own independent topic?

The reason I ask is because as I am going through there are categories, there are pages, yet when I go through the admin section there are posts. So is it possible to post a post on a page, for a specific topic or am I barking up the wrong tree?

  • Okay…I’ll *try* to answer this question…

Page (note the capital “P”) are static Pages that you can create through WordPress. “Static” meaning, stuff that doesn’t have posts on it – it’s a page on your site that pretty much doesn’t change. You can go in and edit it, if you like, but for the most part, what you put up is what you get.

Categories are what you can divide your topics/posts into. So if you’re gonna post about computers, then you can have the category of “computers”.

Posts are the daily updates that you put on the site.

Posts and Pages are two different things.

Hopefully that cleared *something* up for you.

So in english if I want to describe my overall experience with computers, I post a Page, if I want to rant about computers, I create a Post with a category tag so I can search for it later on… right?

Is there a way to keep the front page the same, but have the dirt etc in a page that isn’t the first thing you see?

    Following this line of thought…

Yes, if you want to have one page that’s dedicated to your overall experience and knowledge of computers (for purposes of example, we’ll say this is an online resume) – then yes, you’d create a Page. This page would have your info right there, and would not be changed (except to edit or delete it).

However, if you want to rant about computers, and you do this often, so you’ll be continually updating your site with new rants as they happen, then yes, you create a category called “rants”, and every time you make a post/new rant, you check the box so it appears in that category.

Yes. I do this a lot for clients. Put your WordPress in a subdirectory, and put the index page in the root of the site. You can then have the Page be the first thing people see, and the “blog” on the inside, obtainable via a link in the sidebar.

Here’s two entries in the Codex that can help you achieve this:

    Creating a Static Front Page

    Using WordPress as a CMS

I’ve created a page on my own wp blog and in that page i want to put lots of links. I’ve tried putting links on the page’s post but of all, the max i can add was only 9 links. Whenever i added the 10th link, the page shows some error. Can u tell me what exactly does that mean? Is there a limit to the number of links that can be added in a post on a page??
