I’ve linked my WordPress blog (own domain/web hosting) to a page in Facebook and 9 times out of 10 it is successful. It’s a daily post.

But on the 10th the featured image fails to show, just the link. The next day all is well again.

It seems that when it succeeds the link being sent has an ‘http’ like yesterday’s https://www.fhithich.uk/?p=23874

But when it fails like today’s it displays ‘https’ e.g. https://www.fhithich.uk/?p=23880

Can anyone give me a clue what’s going on? Is it a WordPress or FaceBook problem?

    Thanks in anticipation.

    Mick

    Hi Mick,

I had a look at your site and I noticed that there’s a problem with the XML RPC endpoint on your site.
Problems accessing XML RPC could be due to another plugin, a security module, or a block on your server. As a first step to fixing this, I’d recommend contacting your host to see whether they block XML RPC and if so, to unblock it for Jetpack (they can find our IP range here?https://jetpack.com/support/hosting-faq/).
Let us know what you hear back from your host, and we’ll retest the Jetpack connection once ready.

Thanks. Can’t say I understand but I’ve raised a query with my web hosting (1-2-3 Reg).

Basically Jetpack requires access to the XML RPC file to function properly. On your site, something seems to be blocking it.
Let us know once you’re heard back from your host, we’ll have another look. ??

I have had a response from my web host:

“Hi, Thank you for contacting us. Our servers don’t block such requests especially since the XML RPC is part of the WordPress CMS. You might need to check, as Jetpack representative recommended, if you have a security plugin installed as these usually offer the possibility to disable XML RPC due to the security risk they present. Also, Facebook will send a request for the HTTPS version in most of the cases, but that means you should have a SSL certificate installed as well for that to work. Kind Regards”

I am not sure where I am supposed to check if I have a security plugin installed. It’ll either be with the web host or WordPress.

Also, I understood I didn’t need a SSL certificate if I am not collecting any info from my readers. Reluctant to go down this route as this is a purely non-commercial WordPress blog.

It happened again this morning, had to delete the post and add manually. Beginning to think maybe it’s just something I have to live with.

    Thanks

I had a look at your plugins and it doesn’t look like you have a security one installed. In fact, the Jetpack connection seems to be working correctly now.

It might be an issue with https, in the end, it’s Facebook who decides which image will be shared so I’m thinking, if the link is shared with no image, it might be worth trying their debugger tool directly and scrape until the image appears:

OK thanks, I’ll give it a shot.
