I have a simple problem that hopefully has a simple solution that is eluding me.

    Here is our WP site:
    https://www.bellinghamsings.org

I’ve created “categories” called “Events” and “Past Events”.

The problem is, that despite being ONLY assigned to “Past Events”, a post (Wine, Women & Song) is STILL displaying under the “Events” category page. I’ve monkeyed around with dates to make it display down at the bottom, but why does it continue to display on the “Events” category page even though it is no longer assigned to that category?

    Thank you!

Past events is a child category to events, so is automatically seen as a subset of that category.

    To change this:
In admin, go to Posts => Categories
    click ‘edit’ under ‘Past Events’
Select ‘None’ as the parent category

Thank you — I tried that, and the post “Wine, Women & Song” — which is assigned to the “Past Events” category, STILL shows up under “Events” (i.e. new, up and coming events)

    https://www.bellinghamsings.org/events/

Above is our “Events” category page, and ‘Wine, Women & Song’ still displays there. (at the very bottom, and I added “past event” to its title, for clarity).

    Weird.

You are right that does seem weird. If you go into the post editor for that page, does it show as just being in ‘past events’ or is ‘events’ checked in the category list also?

No, I’ve checked — ONLY “past events” is checked off for that post (Wine, Women & Song). Nothing else.

On the main Posts page where WP lists all posts — if you “filter” to display only “Events” category — the above post does NOT show up. And if you filter to display only “Past Events” — it DOES show up. So, it is sorting them out properly from the Main post page.

    Frustrating!?

    I fixed it!

It was something to do with how I had the “Menu” set up.

Do you happen to know if there is a way to edit on post pages where it says “Archive | Events” or “Archive | Past Events” —- to eliminate the word “Archive” and just enter a title of our choice?

Thanks for all your help and moral support!

Great! glad you found the fix.

The title of the category archive is generated by the theme files so can vary from theme to theme. Some themes have configurable options for titles, but others might require child theme edits. As you are using WooThemes canvas, which is a commercial theme, the best place to ask about this would be WooThemes own support.

    Ah, right, thanks.

Here’s one more posts/categories question for you!

You wouldn’t happen to know how to get the “Recent Posts” widget to ONLY display posts from a specific category would you?

Thanks again for all your great advice.

You can’t do that with the built-in widget, however you can use a plugin such as enhanced recent posts to add a widget that can do this https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/enhanced-recent-posts/ There seem to be a lot of other plugins that offer similar functionality, so it may be worth trying a few until you find one that’s right for your site.

That looks perfect — what would we do without plugins??

    Thanks again.
