• Why when I just imported my posts from another blog did they all come in as “Uncategorized”!?

I have like 500 posts and 50 or 60 categories, now they are all messed up.

Anyone know what I can do?

  • You probaby did an XML import. That messes up the categories giving them new numerical id’s starting at nr 3 (in alfabetical order, so no use).
Was your new blog empty? Then do a sql export of your old blog and import that one to your new blog.

As an alternative: I’ve used Advanced Export without any problems.

Hi Mosey, you use it inder 2.9.1 without problemes? It says compatible up to 2.8.4!

@henkholland: I recently used it with WP 2.8.6 and WP 2.9.1 without any noticeable problems.

I think the version compatibility in this instance is more a reflection of the WordPress version available when the plugin author – Ron Rennick – last updated/tested the plugin?

Thanks for the info. I will give it a try.

@henkholland: I hope it works well for you too. I’ve found it very useful for revamping sites and transferring/managing content.

Importing brought the categories in fine, but didn’t link the posts to them.

I just did a work around.

I deleted all the posts and and imported it all again, and wah-lah, all set.

Since the categories where there already (Ididn’t delete those, they linked up to the posts.

It may have worked without having to delete all the posts, since it usually catches duplicates, but I did it just to be sure.

Kinda idiotic that that has to be done to get it to import properly.

@geezard: I always use the native WordPress Import function and have never had any issues with categories. The only thing I once had a problem with was when I tried to import a custom XML file (not WordPress) and it only linked with one author instead of 3 separate ones.

Glad you managed to resolve the issue by deleting out the posts though and re-importing again.
