• Am new to WP and struggling to get posts to appear on homepage. Have got one at a time to appear in the sidebar and all to appear on News page.

    https://www.norfolkflyfishersclub.co.uk/homepage/

    I wanted to show 3 posts on Homepage and then have a link to Events page. I have static under settings and readings but have tried both.

    I am involved in another WP.org site which does what I want but I can’t find out why it is working on one and despite my best efforts not on mine. The other site is: https://www.puntclub.co.uk/

    Need simple explanation please. Also the featured image doesn’t always appear. Have tried playing with static and latest post under settings.

  • Hello and welcome to WordPress!

    I assume as you are new you’re using the latest version which would have the block editor available. To get your most recent posts to appear on the homepage you can do the following…

    1. Navigate to page edit screen for your homepage in the admin dashboard
    2. In the content editing area, click where you would like to insert a list of your posts
    3. Click on the Add block ( + ) in the left hand side of the editor interface
    4. Scroll down to the Widgets section and click on the Latest Posts icon

    By default it should bring up the 5 most recent posts. If you only want 3, make sure the Latest Posts block is still selected. On the right hand side of the editor interface you’ll notice some available options to configure.

    Configure the ‘Number of items’ count in the ‘Sorting and Filtering’ section

    This will just give you a simple list of your posts though, if you want the 3 posts below the menu like they have on the PuntClub site you’ll need to choose which 3 posts you want showing.

    Once you have chosen the 3 posts, add a Featured tag to them. Navigate to Appearance->Customize and click on the Featured Content section. Choose your layout and under the Tag name section input Featured.

    Currently there isn’t a way to get your 3 most recent posts to automatically load up there, you’ll just need to manually update it when you want the content to change.

    Regarding the featured image, when are you not seeing it showing up? I’ve refreshed the homepage of your site several times and the featured image of the fish/rod is always showing for me.

    Hopefully the above explanations didn’t confuse you too much! If you have any other questions please let me know.

    Thanks so much that has solved part of the problem but I still can’t get the images to show with the posts. I have set them as featured image and done the Appearances/Customize and tag thing.

    When the list of posts comes up in All posts none of the posts have Featured under the tag column; so I am obviously doing something wrong.

    Hi, does the Featured tag exist under Posts->Tags in the admin dashboard? If it does exist, what is the Count number for that tag?

    Thread Starter sailingval

    (@sailingval)

    Yes featured does appear under posts/tags. The count is 0. I presume I need to increase that to 3 (or what ever I want).

    Not sure how I change that.

    Correct, you’ll need to add the featured tag to the posts you want to appear. You can do this one of 2 ways….

    Go to the Posts screen in the admin dashboard, hover over the post you wanted featured and click on Quick Edit. From the window that pops up, type featured into the tags textbox and then click on Update. It should add the tag into the Tags column on that post.

    Otherwise, navigate into the single post view where you can write the content. On the right hand side you should see a Tags section to add a tag to the post there. If you don’t see this, click on the 3 vertical dots at the top right of the editing interface on the far right. Then, click on Options at the bottom and make sure the Tags document panel is checked.

    Thanks for that.

    How can

    Can I get the post on Homepage to link to a specific page like Events. I would like to click on Club lunch and it go to the details on the Events page.

    Secondly how can I change the layout of the Homepage to make the blue bar where the posts are showing smaller, different colour etc. I now have the three post titles appearing under the blue bar but I don’t need those twice.

    Thirdly how do I play with the side bar. I can’t get the titles to all come up in the same format, and I would like to be able to put the old fishing reports into archives but when I tried that the posts above disappeared.

    Lastly thanks so much for your help. Are you happy for me to keep asking you for help.

    Ok, will try to address each of your questions.

    1. Remember how you placed the Latest Posts block on the homepage for the 3 posts? We are going to change it up a bit right now. Go back to the page you have set to your homepage in the admin dashboard.

    Delete the Latest Posts block (click inside of the Latest Posts block, click the 3 verticle dots at the top right of the current block toolbar and then click Remove Block) and add in a Columns (under Layout Elements section) block in its place.

    If you want to have the 3 links like you do now, click on the 3 columns icon. Once the 3 columns show up in the editor, click on each of the + in the grey boxes and add a Paragraph block to each column. Inside of the Paragraph blocks, you can insert a link to whatever URL you’d like along with the specific text you want that link to be.

    2. The step above should remove the 3 post titles that exist under the “Homepage” text right now. Which blue area are you wanting to make smaller? There is the lefthand sidebar which contains Latest News and shows your most recent posts or there is the 3 featured posts below the main menu. Are you wanting to just decrease the blue space under those 3 posts?

    3. That depends on the format you want them to display in. The sidebar content is controlled in Appearance->Widgets and depending on how you want data displayed there are various different widgets. Do you have a more specific idea of how you’re wanting content to look in the sidebar? I may be able to recommend what to do with the widgets to get that done.

    Typically it is suggested that any new requests for help are posted in a new thread but in this case you can either do that or keep asking questions here and I’ll try to assist as much as possible.

    Thanks, will play with all of this later today.

    I have removed the post titles under the Homepage title. But I am struggling with linking the three posts/photos with the relevant pages (under point 1).

    I have located the 3 column icon and then added a paragraph block and copied the URL from the events page and lastly the fishing report page. but I am now back with the 3 posts under the Homepage heading. Getting confused on that one. I really would like to just click the photo and get the link to the Events page or which ever one.

    Point 2 the blue bar I would like to reduce the width of it and maybe change the colour. I did add the twentyfourteen colors plugin. Was that needed. Plugins and widgets is another area I don’t really understand and am struggling with what I need on what is a relatively simple website.

    3. I would like the side bar to either show the recent posts up to about 6 of them and possibly have an archive section where I could put old fishing reports and then clear it every 6 month. Also some of the post heading appear in capitals and some not – don’t know why or how to alter them.

    There is another issue that I will need to ask about. We are going to be sponsored by two firms. How do I do that effectively on the Homepage and with a link to further information, perhaps in another page. Is that a plugin? Should I ask about that on another forum.

    With your help I am getting there and I am very grateful. Val

    Hello again!

    1. Not quite sure of your intention here, do you want it like the PuntClub site that you linked initially? If so, you would just need to create whatever post with the information you want in it, then set that post as a Featured post to get it to show up as a photo that visitors can click on.

    2. If you want to change the width of the left hand sidebar you can use the following in Appearance->Customize->Additional CSS

    #secondary {
    	width: 130px;
    }

    The colors plugin that you used looks like it should be ok if it does what you want color wise. Though with the sidebar change above there may need to be further adjustments made that I noticed depending upon the width that you choose.

    3. For the amount of posts, you can change this by going to Appearance->Widgets and modifying the Recent Posts widget data that is setup in the Primary Sidebar section.

    For the archive part, you would most likely need to use the Custom HTML widget where you could create a list of the reports that you want to show up. The custom HTML would look something like this

    <ul class="reports-list">
        <li><a href="url-to-report-here">Report #1</a></li>
        <li><a href="url-to-report-here">Report #2</a></li>
        <li><a href="url-to-report-here">Report #3</a></li>
        <li><a href="url-to-report-here">Report #4</a></li>
        <li><a href="url-to-report-here">Report #5</a></li>
        <li><a href="url-to-report-here">Report #6</a></li>
        <li><a href="url-to-report-here">Report #7</a></li>
    </ul>

    The capitalization is dependent upon how you titled the post on the edit post screen. If you go back to edit that post in particular, you can modify the post title at the top of the editor to change whether it shows in all uppercase or not.

    4. For the sponsorship, most likely just add that information into the content on your front page that you’ve set. From there, you can create a new page or a post and then link to that specific page/post from the front page content.

    Hopefully that all makes sense!

    The Nuisance again.

    How do I get the featured image in a post the right size. Everything I try (altering pixel size, cropping the original etc) I am not getting the whole image in. The lady holding the fish should have 5 move at the bottom of the picture.

    Thanks

    Someone on the committee asked how well protected the site is against virus etc.

    Is that best dome by a plugin, is so which one?

    Thanks

    Hi again ??

    The featured image thumbnails on the homepage should have the following dimensions:

    346×192 pixels

    Regarding security on the site, that would depend upon your hosting environment, the strength of the passwords you have for each user that has backend access along with other variables. Depending upon whether you have a budget for security will also decide what options you have.

    If you can afford $10-20 a month it may be worth looking into setting up a firewall on the site. There are several different companies that offer such an option nowadays specifically for WordPress.

    Additionally, you can install a security plugin to help block some attacks on the site. These plugins cannot protect you against every attack and no single solution can but they do help.

    I can’t recommend any security plugins in particular as each one has different features and different configurations. It may be a good idea to search for a few different security plugins, install and activate them one by one on the site and see what features they offer that you would find useful.

    I am trying to update the posts page -News but the same message comes up, just on this page: You are currently editing the page that shows your latest posts.

    I can’t seem to get past that even though I have finished updating posts.

    I am also trying to get old posts (up to 10) to appear in the sidebar and on the post page but struggling to find out how to do that. I would also like the posts in the sidebar to just have the image, title and date but no extra words. The Punt Club can do that but I am obviously missing something.

    Help please. Thanks

    Forgot to say I am using (as is the Punt Club website: https://www.puntclub.co.uk) two widgets:

    Latest Post Widget: Latest News
    Post in sidebar

    but the appearance on the two websites is very different.
