Posts spontaneously reverted to one of its first revisions

  • This post was published in July. It was much longer than what is showing now. It had about 600 more words, more images, etc. What it shows now is an incomplete draft from long before it was published. And all of the subsequent revisions from that draft are nowhere to be found.

    1. Why would a post randomly revert to a previous, incomplete draft on its own?

    2. Why would the revision history for the post be lost?

    3. Is there anything I might be able to do to fix this? (Backups can’t help here).

    I want to fix this. And more importantly, I want to prevent this from happening again.

  • That is odd. Honestly my first guess is that it was not WordPress but perhaps your host? Is there any other content reversion that would suggest it was a restore completed by your host?

    Also FWIW – If you have a back-up containing a more recent revision restoring it would work for you.

    Thanks @dwcouch. That makes sense. Two updates:

    1. I was able to recover the content from the Way Back Machine: https://web.archive.org/web/20170826184218/byrdnick.com/archives/11793/christopher-peacocke-reflective-self-consciousness

    2. I had migrated my site to a new host about a month after this post went up. Perhaps —?related to your hypothesis —?this post reverted back to an earlier revision as a result of that migration process. I’m hoping that this is the only post that was reverted/corrupted. I’ll check the rest ASAP.

    I’d say your hypothesis is the current best explanation. If I can conclusively support one or another hypothesis, I’ll post an update.

    In the meantime, I remain open to additional thoughts and ideas.
