Potential Problems with WP 5.6

If you have upgraded to WP 5.6 and suddenly find that your lightboxes are not opening, this is a known issue with some lightbox scripts.

As some background, Photonic supports many lightbox scripts, some of which have been around for a very long time. These scripts rely on jQuery, but they haven’t been updated as more versions of jQuery have been released.

Up until WP 5.5 this wasn’t an issue, since WP included a rather old version of jQuery. However, with WP 5.6, the included version of jQuery was bumped up. While this has caused no problem with Photonic as such, some of the old scripts that are bundled with Photonic broke.

I am aware of the following scripts with issues:

1. Fancybox
2. Image Lightbox
3. Swipebox

I have started fixing these scripts and am done with Fancybox and Swipebox, while Image Lightbox is mostly done. I will release a patch when I am done, or, alternatively, I will take a bit more time release the next big version (which is almost ready).

If you are affected by this issue, the simplest way around it is to use a different lightbox, such as LightGallery, or Fancybox3. Once I have patched the issue you can switch back to your original choice of lightbox.
