A friend just brought this to my attention, since there’s a theme listed on this “package” called “Blue Cubes” and I have a Kickass-Boxes in Blue which I’ve released for noncommercial use under the CC license. I’m not sure I should give this guy’s site a link here, so excuse the copy/paste necessity– please check this out.

One wonders how he can sell other peoples’ work and profit from it (maybe even mine, though I’m not paying the dough to that wanker to find out.)

Just thought maybe everyone should know about this. I don’t know what, if anything, can be done.

  • Yeah, that’s some scary stuff. Let me give you $150 and the ftp login for my site….but I’m guessing what he’s doing is “legal”…

I don’t see anything wrong here. He’s wrapping wordpress around a management interface that makes creating and managing multiple blogs easier.

That’s very similar to cpanel/whm etc wrapping apache/mysql/bind/mail around a management interface that makes creating and managing multiple sites easier.

Hurrrrhhhhh…. I’m not that busy or overworked, regardless that I have a dozen blogs. I’ll pass….

    (@vkaryl)

Yeah, but cpanel et all are free once you’re already paying the hosting….

Well, I won’t mince words, I see it as a splog farm… I’m sure the authors of the plugins he’s using didn’t have that intention of use when they released them, but I guess that’s the caveat of free/open source…

I ran across something about the Calcanis guy somewhere the other day, can’t remember where now, but it left a really bad taste in my mouth….

He offers 105 themes… one is called Dark Maple – I doubt he made one exactly with the same name as mine ??

Likewise, it puts my Scam City theme in a whole new light now…

Could get ugly, really…. if you change the license now it doesn’t obviate him grabbing it before the change.

    Kind of “sub-sub nasty”, y’know?

Um, I came up with one idea . . . though it borders on being nasty back . . .

As opposed to letting karma take its destined course, you mean? I’d go for that…. I’m sure that karma can always use a helping hand….

Under the current license, I am 75% sure that he is allowed to re-package and sell WordPress. But, I wonder how many of those 150 themes have a non-distribution and non-commercial license? It would be nice to see someone take him to court over that.

macmanx, I don’t think he’s even selling WP, he’s selling a package of plugins and themes. On the site it says you are required to install WP, then provide him with your FTP login info (shakes head again), he then dumps all the plugins, themes, and RSS crap onto the persons site. I stopped reading at some point amongst that.

In that case, I wonder how many of those “over 105 dazzling themes” and “over 500 plugins” have a non-distribution and non-commercial license? It would be nice to see someone take him to court over that.
