This idea/concern might be minuscule by “developer” standards but I’ve finally had it with uploading a < 3mb .png image and have WP throw a shared server config-induced memory error (DreamHost).

Is there a way to pre-size and crunch images BEFORE upload so they’re simply coordinated into the database like any other image normally would be?

My point: I’m willing to prep things on my computer before hand. Just want the addition in media to be more efficient and error free.

A 3MB Upload limit is really low.

Check out this article in their knowledgebase that will show you how to increase this via a custom php.ini file.

Personally, I set mine to at least 32MB as sometimes I have some really large media files that I don’t want to have to compress inside of Photoshop.

Instead, I use ShortPixel Image Optimizer which will automatically compress and optimize on upload.

It’s free for your first 100 images, then credits are pretty cheap. I went ahead and bought some as it really increased the loadtime of my blog.

Hope this gets you straightened out! Good luck!

3 MB isn’t my upload limit and I have my memory settings maxed out (shared server). Still, WordPress crashes when I upload a file ABOVE 2.5mb … often times less than that.

    My questions is this:

Is there a way to pre-size and crunch images BEFORE upload so they’re simply coordinated into the database like any other image normally would be?

That’s the question I’d like to have answered.

I’ve still not resolved this matter.

I’m reading that DreamHost is a possible reason for all of this trouble.

I’d like to PRE “crunch” the images before upload.

    Is that possible?

The image is 3megs but what are the dimensions?

In PHP image compression, both matter a lot.

WORST case scenario (portrait), max dimensions would be 1000×1778, though this happens often with landscape at 1000×563.
