    Currently using NextGENeration Version 1.9.13

    Hi,
I maintain a few sites that use NextGEN 1.9.13 and have been very tempted to install NextCellent. A few things no longer work for me with NextGEN, like being able to sort my images in galleries. Prior to pulling the trigger on NextCellent, I’d like to ask:

    1) Is NextCellent a direct replacement in that I could install it and it would take over immediately for a deactivated NextGEN, or would I need to go through every gallery and manually rebuild them?

    2) I do typically add multiple galleries to a single post, I assume this is ok too in NextCellent?

    3) Does anyone know of paid independent NextCellent (either the developers of 3rd party) freelance troubleshooters / coders? I wouldn’t mind paying in case there’s an issue. I imagine others who run business sites would be willing to pay as well.

Just have slightly cold feet and looking for a bit more specific information prior to trying. The page link below shows how I currently use NextGEN.

    Thanks very much, John

I just switched from NextGEN to NextCellent Gallery – NextGEN Legacy and it works fine for me on WordPress 4.91 and PHP 7.0.27.

    1) yes all my NextGEN galleries were found by NextCellent Gallery – NextGEN Legacy, and i could continue creating / adding / editing from where i left of with NextGEN.

    2) yes its possible to add multiple galleries to a single post, i do that via the shortcode tags [nggallery id=gallery-number], those work on NextCellent Gallery – NextGEN Legacy just like on NextGEN.

Only thing i found missing sofar was:
    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/edit-gallery-link-not-displaying-after-image-upload/

I’m hoping that this plugin will stay supported.

I just wanted to say thanks again damsko for your help. I did make the switch to NextCellent last night and only had to alter a few things in the NextCellent nggallery.css file. to get back to where I was with NextGEN.

I’m 100% in the hunt-and-peck class of people working in WordPress, using resources like your help and the “Inspect Element” option to poke around with variations.

NextCellent seems to be working very nicely, I can now sort images in galleries as well as create new thumbnails (I didn’t mention this initially, but it was sort of dead in NextGEN 1.9.13 for me).

I have a few more things I may ask about NextCellent but I’ll kick off a new thread as they pop-up. Again, thanks a ton to the folks who continue this plugin, and your advice!

    John

    OK success!

I’m also “hunt-and-peck” class and i always find it a challenge to keep things going with the ongoing development of the WWW, WordPress and depending on the kindness of “open-source” plugin developers to continue supporting plugins and keeping them compatible.

I think from reading your posts here you’re definitely in a higher level hunt-and-peck class than me ??

My last question in this thread if I may… do you think there’s any reason at all to keep the NextGEN 1.9.13 plugin installed? Of course it and all of it’s associated files appear deactivated in the “Edit Plugins” area. Just wanted to make sure NextCellent doesn’t use any leftover, and not clearly visible, remnants of the original NextGEN plugin prior to deleting NextGEN altogether.

Yes the NextGEN Gallery 1.9.13 plugin can be removed, i first also deactivated it (NextGEN Gallery and NextCellent Gallery can not be activated at the same time) and then tried NextCellent Gallery, when that proved to be working i removed the NextGEN Gallery plugin from my server.

BUT my advice would be to use FTP to simply remove the “nextgen-gallery” plugin folder from your server (“wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery“) and not use a “uninstall” option of the plugin itself (if it has one), some plugins have an uninstall that will clean up its installation and remove the tables it created from the database… and that of course would be totally unwanted in this case. These tables hold all data on the uploaded images and galleries that NextCellent Gallery will continue to use and build on.

I also would advice to keep a copy of the old NextGEN Gallery 1.9.13 plugin on your computer. I keep previous versions of the plugins that i use(d). They hardly take up any space.

I thought I remembered hearing somewhere that a plugin can add db tables w/ permission, but uninstalling through the Dashboard can’t remove tables. That being said, I took your advice and backed up the NextGEN plugin folder via FTP, then deleted it from the server.

Ran WPDBSpringClean and WP-Optimize, cleared the cache and all looks good!

This is the first time in a long time that the Plugins section of my dash doesn’t have an update notice next to it! Nice.
