• Hi

I don’t have a problem yet, but suspect I’ll soon run into some trouble.

Here it goes. I’ve made some major changes to the Twenty Eleven theme and of course it was just last week I became aware of the a-someness of child themes… so, my site is basically just a tweaked twenty eleven ..

so question is, can I assign my theme as a child theme to a twentyeleven in some way. I’ve already named the template something else. Or is there no other way than backing up all files, update and copy paste code into a new child theme? (Which of course means a great deal of work).
Or could i Install twenty eleven again, assign my theme which is now named PE3A as a child theme through the css and then update?

Thanks in advance, this forum is fantastic!

That’s quite a text! I’d just edit the folder name.

What also works, CHMOD the themes folder so that WP can’t edit it. The upgrade will work, but the theme will not be overwritten. Mind that with such a CHMOD your theme breaks if you still try to upgrade it using the built-in upgrade function.

and editing the folder name wouldn’t harm my theme?

i want to be quite thorough on this since we have worked on the site for a while now and are almost ready to launch … would be a shame throwing it all away because of carelessness ??

I’d just edit the folder name.

You also need to edit the theme’s name in style.css and upload a fresh copy of Twenty Eleven.

thanks to both of you … I’ve got all the files from my www directory backed up – just in case. Will try it later today. Hopefully I won’t have anymore questions ??

OK, I tried changing the name of the folder, renamed the theme in the style.css and uploaded a fresh copy of twentyeleven… everything broke down and i needed to reinstall wordpress…
luckily i did it on a test site… tried a bit more times and seems like it goes wrong when i rename the theme folder
..on my almost live site the style.css already has a changed theme name to PE3A and it works fine…
any suggestions on what to do?
