• I am thinking of converting my site to use Pretty Permalinks. I have been running WordPress for a year or so now, so there are plenty of posts in history on my site. How hard will it be to implement? Am I going to have to rebuild my whole site?

I have read the guides on Permalinks, but I am failing to understand the directions. Is there a more dumbed down version out there somewhere?

    Thanks!
    Tim

  • if you are on a linux server it will be fine
if on a windows server you can’t use pretty permalinks
just choose a permalink structure and implement it

Ok, so let me ask this. If I do a drag and drop backup of my public_html folder, and I do a database backup before I do anything, I should be able to get back to where I was if something goes wrong, correct?

I am on a Linux platform, so I should be good.

    Thank you!

a database back up is always good
no need to back up files, though, as nothing is done with them

really if you have a problem it is as simple as deleting the .htaccess and going back to default permalinks
    problems are rare

Just make an export or a database backup to be sure, but nothing much can go wrong if you don’t try to use the permalink %postname% (i.e. only postname). If you get an error after changing the permalink (under “settings”->”permalinks”), just hit the “back” button and switch back to default. And read the page that Samuel links to.
