Here is my problem. I want to do pretty permalinks but my IT people say no htaccess files. Kind of a large problem for WP. So i told them all the upsides of having pretty permalinks, SEO, usability, etc. Still no budge.

Before you say get a new host not an option. This is for my job I work for a university. So I am at their will. I cant go elsewhere.

So does anyone have any ideas? I have mod_rewirte setup. Im not a server person just front end person. So could you tell what I can tell him.

  • Easy way: Add index.php/ to the beginning of your custom permalink string (check Permalinks for “almost pretty”).

Harder way: I could be off base, but I’m pretty sure anything WP wants to put in .htaccess could also go in the apache config directly. Odds are, when you’re at the Permalinks page and change to anything beyond default, WP will display what should go into .htaccess. Show that to your server guy and see if he’ll consider tossing it into httpd.conf for your directory.

Thanks this is perfect. One thing that did confuse me, is

For almost pretty Permalinks, you’ll want to make changes in the custom field at Options -> Permalinks. Add index.php to the front of the Custom structure.

Thought this might help anyone that reads this.
