prev and next buttons dont work with permalinks

  • i have previous_post_link and next_post_link set up on my archive.php and permalinks set up with: “/%category%/%postname%/”

    So i view category Blog

    site.com/blog

    would be the url, i hit back or “See More Posts” or whatever, i hit the previous_post_link and i get

    site.com/blog/page/2

    which doesnt work. i get a 404.

    it only works when i view

    site.com/?cat=7

    to

    site.com/?cat=7&paged=2

    (that is clearly without permalinks)

    whats up?

    i read on https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Next_and_Previous_Links
    that the code doesnt work on permalink websites. is that true?
