Prevent Manual Order TAX Errors when manually adding orders in admin

    When you create a manual order in admin, why is tax not calculated when you click SAVE underneath the order entry block (not the create order button!), after adding the products and shipping to the order? Currently clicking save only calculates the order without TAX.

    This means you have to click the same SAVE button again, which has now turned into a button called Re-Calculate, in order for the system to then check the order details against the TAX system in woocommerce.

    This results in huge manual order errors because people will and are forgetting to click this button a second time. It also results in huge admin problems when you create an invoice which then has now tax on it, when it should.

    I appreciate that woocommerce is an ecommerce system, but it needs to be able to handle manual order entries easily and efficiently like every other dedicated ecommerce platform.

    Tax is correctly setup on woocommerce, because all my web orders work fine.

    I’m not quite sure what version of WooCommerce you’re using, but the Recalculate button option should be available before creating/saving the order.

    Here’s a screencast of the process using WordPress 5.0.3 and WooCommerce 3.5.3:

    It won’t automatically add the tax to each product when the product is first added, the Recalculate option must be selected. There is not currently a way around that as it isn’t possible to have taxes, etc. applied automatically without manually selecting Recalculate.

    I’d recommend making sure the customer’s Billing Address and Shipping Address are entered before adding products, as that will help apply the proper tax rates.

    Thanks for the reply.

    The point i’m trying to make here is that a user has to click the “re-calculate” button in order for taxes to be applied, but why if the customers billing address information has already been entered?

    It is very possible to FORGET to click the recalculate button and my staff are forgetting it! This means orders are then saved without tax applied, which results in invoices being generated without tax – a big no no when it comes to tax!

    The web side of woocommerce calculates tax based on country, why is the back end manual order entry aspect of woocommerce always behind the front end?

    We’re using 3.4.3 and you have to click “save” to finalise adding the items to the order, and then need to click the same button but has changed name to “re-calculate”.

    This may seem a small issue, but when woocommerce is used to run a professional business which has its accounts audited, it is a serious problem when the auditors find invoices without tax on them, when it should have them! It would be their recommendation to have a system which is fail safe.

    Thanks for the update. As Zach indicated within WooCommerce when adding a manual order the recalculate button must be used to calculate the totals and tax on the order

    From what you describe within your reply the hurdle your facing is due to some of your staff accidentally forgetting to calculate tax rather by not using the Recalculate button rather than WooCommerce not calculating the tax correctly or similar for manual orders.

    What I’d suggest is creating a small document for your staff which has a step by step guide they can follow with regards to the process for manually creating a new order. With this approach, in place, your staff should then be able to follow the correct process for manual order creation when using WooCommerce and should be less likely to forget calculating taxes.
