preview site takes me to index page, not WP page

I’m working on a hidden site while having a basic html page up as a home page that is visible. When I go to view my home page in WP, it takes me to the index.html page, not the WP home page. I’m sure it’s something simple in how I’m directing the page but somehow I’m not seeing what I’m doing wrong. How can I view my WP home page not the html page?
