Previewing a site transferred to WordPress

  • I am currently working on transferring an established (five years) site from TypePad to WordPress.

    I am working on a ‘dummy’ site at first until I get the hang of the new interface and the layout of the theme I will be using (Transcript from Gabfire).

    All is going well and I am finding answers to all my questions – except one.

    I am currently using domain mapping to map my URL to my TypePad site. When I am ready to start the WordPress install on my host (GoDaddy), I am not sure how I will be able to preview my new site, because when I try to access https://www.example.com it will be redirected to my existing Typepad site.

    I do not want to make my new WordPress site live until I am sure the transfer has gone smoothly (with 2,000 posts it will take a while and will need some work on images).

    Does anyone have an idea of how I cam preview my new site while still leaving the old one active until the transfer is complete? Is it possible?

  • well, you could install WP to a subdirectory, like wordpress or something. Get it all going, and then move it to root, or just run it from root…

    if you want it to be not accessible there are membership type plugins that would put the install behind a password until you are ready to go live…

    Thanks RVoodoo – I think moving WordPress from its own folder to the root directory is tricky with GoDaddy because you can’t get at the .htaccess file to alter it as required. There’s no way to make invisible files visible with GoDaddy unless (I believe) you do a manual install of WordPress. I may have to look into doing that.

    hmm… I have WP on godaddy…. and I’ve never had a problem with the .htaccess. Thing is, I believe, if you haven’t set up pretty permalinks through your settings, you don’t have an .htaccess file.

    I’ve never heard of any hidden files on godaddy hosting….. I have 6 WP installs running. Some on manual setup, some were one click setup…..

    That’s interesting – I read that on a one-click WordPress setup on GoDaddy you couldn’t view the .htaccess file to change it. I have altered the permalink setup on my site to match the original links from my old site so I believe I would need to access the .htaccess file.

    I’m going to have a go with my dummy site and see if I can get anywhere with moving the WordPress files as suggested in the first link you mentioned.
