I thought I had the plugin settings configured right, but I just checked again, and nothing is working.

I have registered four categories of cookies: Commenting, Privacy Preferences, Google Analytics, and Google Analytics Opt-Out.

Privacy Preferences contains the gdpr cookies and is set to Required. The other three categories are set to ON because the actual setting of each of those cookies requires the user to take some other affirmative action. For instance, the Commenting cookies are only placed if the user leaves a comment and clicks the checkbox to save their information.

I have also set up a Privacy Tools page that contains the button to let users open up and modify their privacy preferences.

If I go to the site in a different browser, not logged in as the administrator, the banner pops up. I click the consent button and the banner is hidden. This seems correct. But if I go to the Privacy Tools page and open the Privacy Preferences window, all of the options I set to ON in the backend settings are gray. (I assume gray is OFF and blue is ON? The front end does not say.) Changing those options and saving settings has no effect. For instance, if the Google Analytics opt-in cookie is present, turning that category OFF does not remove the cookie.

(I have a separate banner for a Google Analytics opt-in because I cannot get the opt-in functionality to work through the GDPR plugin at all and I cannot trust that it is working correctly, especially since the user’s saved settings don’t seem to have any effect.)

I thought a category clicked to ON was supposed to remain ON unless the user changes it, and that if the user then switches a previously accepted category to OFF, any cookies placed in that category are deleted. However, so, as far as I can see, neither my back end settings or the user’s choices have any effect at all. This doesn’t seem right!

Am I misunderstanding, have I done something wrong, or is this some kind of glitch>

I just tested this on your site and it seems to be recording my preferences.

At first, I accepted everything. Then I navigated to the privacy tools page and toggle analytics off. I then navigated away and I could still see analytics off.

BTW, the analytics opt-out category is not needed. You can just check if _ga is allowed or not and run the blocking code. Having both will cause confusion.

When I test it (obviously, without being logged in and after clearing cookies and the browser cache), accepting the consents initially has no effect on the settings that display in the Privacy Preferences (even ones that are supposed to default to ON), and changing those consents has no effect on cookies that have already been placed.

(On the user Privacy Preferences menu, I assume if a switch is set to grey, that means OFF and blue means ON, although there isn’t anything in the UI that says so.)
