    Hi,

Thank you again for a great plugin!

I’m using this plugin on an educational website. I would like for the ability for my students (members) to join a live stream that I create once per week (over something like YouTube Live rather than Zoom as there may be >100 people watching and I don’t need to see their faces etc.)

Currently, I am posting a link to my unlisted YouTube Live stream each week on a membership only page. However, that link can of course still be shared by members to non-members. (There is also safety concerns with that as my students are young.)

I could instead set the streams to private, but that would involve collecting the email addresses that my members use to log in to YouTube (which is not necessarily the same as the email address they used to register on my site) so that I can grant them access to the stream.

I could probably use the PM Pro events add on to collect those emails for each stream, but that seems quite cumbersome. I would rather just have a “join stream” button on a membership-only page, similar I suppose to how the discord server add on works. (Discord has streaming built in but it only allows a maximum of 50 viewers which would be too small for my needs.)

Is there a more convenient way of easily allowing only members to join a large stream on something like YouTube Live (or similar)?

    Thanks!

    Hello @ucdguy,

Thank you for using Paid Memberships Pro.

The PMPro restrictions can protect your page or post that the video lives on, but your video streaming service is the one that should allow you to protect your video link.

Personally, I use Vimeo on a course site I run. I can allow the video only to be viewed from my URL, and it can block the users from getting the direct link to the video. I am unclear if YouTube provides these options.

    Hi,

Thank you for your quick reply!

    1) I also use Vimeo for my courses, but only for already recorded videos. I use Vimeo Plus for this purpose; however, to have live streaming functionality I believe that I need Vimeo Premium, which is over ten times more expensive.

    2) My live stream must also have a chat window where students (members) can type in questions while I stream. Therefore, I cannot simply embed a live video but instead need to redirect them to another site with that stream and chat window.

YouTube Live is almost perfect except there is no way to easily guarantee that only my members can watch the stream. Discord is also almost perfect except that only a maximum of 50 viewers can watch the stream, which is too small for my needs.

Is there any way of having a live stream that 1) is only accessible by my members, 2) can be accessed by all of my members regardless of how many and 3) includes a chat window?

    Thanks!

PMPro does not have this functionality to restrict a live stream directly in the way you have described, while PMPro can protect the page the live stream is being displayed on, viewers may still be able to copy and share your live stream URL outside of your website, and users with a direct live stream URL would be able to view this on Youtube and not your website.

I recommend reaching out to Youtube Support to confirm if you are able to prevent viewers from copying and sharing a live stream URL outside of your website and on Youtube.

    Hi,

Thank you for your detailed reply!

I understand that PMPro does not natively support livestreaming for members only. However, PMPro does, for example, have a Discord Integration Add On that allows for the creation of a member-only server. Unfortunately, as the main focus of Discord is not livestreaming, they only allow a maximum of 50 viewers for their livestreams.

I was therefore wondering if there was an add on for a different program that focused on livestreams and therefore likely allowed for more than 50 viewers for private (member-only) streams?

I recommend reaching out to Youtube Support to confirm if you are able to prevent viewers from copying and sharing a live stream URL outside of your website and on Youtube.

    This is not possible unfortunately.

    Thanks again!

@ucdguy Thank you for your patience, you would need to use something like Vimeo or Zoom and invite user’s to a Zoom broadcast (I think it’s called).

You may use Zapier to automate Paid Memberships Pro and the video streaming software as a workaround.
