• Hi,

The Private Message button is appearing on all Member loops in the Members archive page. If the plugin setting for ‘Only Friends Mode’ is checked, shouldn’t it hide that button too for members who you’re not Friends with?

Edit: I’ve just noticed that if you’re not an Admin, the message box is hidden if you try to PM someone you’re not Friends with but there’s no message to say for example ‘You’re not friends with this user’ – it says the same thing as it normally would: ‘Write the message to start conversation’, which is confusing.

So, could you please update the plugin so that it either has a conditional message if they’re not Friends or potentially even better, hide the Private Message button if they’re not Friends? Thanks.

Hi. There’s been a few updates since this message but the Private Message option is still showing for everyone on the Members listing and there’s no custom message if you DO try to PM them. Are you still planning to address this?

To be honest, the best approach would be to only echo the Private Message button if the user is Friends with them so there would be no need for a custom message in that case.

    Thanks.

this is is abit specific to your website. probably will add that option later.

But Member listings are a native Buddypress feature, so even with a vanilla Buddypress install (and even if you hide the built in native Buddypress Message button) there should not really be an option to private message any user (your plugin’s Private Message button) if you’ve chosen to only be able to message Friends in the BP Better Messages options. They contradict each other and it’s inconsistent.

If I tell my users ‘You can only message Friends’ and then they see a Private Message button on all users in the Members listing and they try to message them and despite them not being allowed to actually type a message, there’s no warning to remind them they can only message Friends. See what I mean? Hopefully you will consider adding it soon please. For now, I will have to hide both buttons with CSS. Thanks.

there is warnings and messages built in which shows them that they must be friends when trying to chat.

That’s exactly what I was asking for. When was this added because if you recall I said that the only message displayed before was ‘Start typing’ etc. Where is this ‘must be friends’ message supposed to be displayed because I don’t see one?

Is it because I’m an Admin so I can message anyone by default?

    Sorry for the confusion.

Hi, I can confirm there is a message there now saying they must be friends if they do click on Private Message for a non-friend. I would still appreciate the option to hide the Private Message button in the Members listing on non-friends.

I am using Youzify by the way (formerly Youzer) and you mention that plugin in the Tested With… section. At the moment on the Members listing, it shows both your Private Message button AND the Buddypress/Youzify Message button. So I’m hiding the Buddypress one with CSS since that always starts a new Message even if you’ve got a thread open with the user, whereas your Private Message button does return to an existing thread if the option is enabled in the settings.

On the Friends section of a profile, it also show both buttons for each Friend so again I’m hiding the Buddypress one with CSS, but as you can see from this screenshot, it only shows the Buddypress button on the Tabs bar of a user’s Profile:

Can you update the plugin to add your Private Message button here as well please? Thanks.
