Of course, private posts and pages should be hidden in the sidebar widget by default. However, even after authorization (login), private posts and pages don’t show up.

WordPress version 5.2.3, Theme: Twenty Seventeen. It’s a fresh installation. The only thing I did was to create a few sample posts and pages. Some public, some private. The public ones show up, the private one stay hidden in the sidebar widget no matter if I’m logged in or not.

    Thanks! ??

That’s intentional, the widget will only ever display publicly posted posts and pages.

@macmanx Oh, okay. Thanks for the reply. Any way to change that? A plugin maybe?

    There’s no direct way.

There might be a plugin, but I haven’t seen one myself (which isn’t saying one doesn’t exist, there just is currently 54,622 plugins in the free directory alone, and I don’t know all of them).

@macmanx Of course it’s impossible for you to know them all, didn’t mean to say that ?? I just thought, it would be kind of a common issue, no? I have some pages which I only want to show up in the sidebar once the visitor is logged in. Like a “secret menu” to private pages for registered users. Am I thinking something completely the wrong way here?

This is actually the first I’ve hard of someone wanting this in quite some time. ??

@macmanx Oh, I didn’t expect that. What’s the point of private pages, then?

Just pages that are only available to logged in users.

Lots of folks use those, I just haven’t heard many folks ask about why the widget wasn’t displaying them in quite some time.

@macmanx Yeah, but usually I want to have an easy way to provide access to those pages, right? Doesn’t matter if private or public. That’s why I’m confused about the widget not showing them.

I found this plugin https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/posts-in-sidebar/ which has the option to show private pages, too. So I’m now using that widget instead of the regular one. ??
