• Hi, so I am using ACF Pro and now I wonder…is there a way to switch to SCF and receive the pro options as well?

If you use ACF Pro just run the regular updates like before. SCF is not the same as ACF, maybe it’s now but it will change over time.

Thanks, guess I’ll be doing that for now. I am very confused by the current lawsuit, trying to identify the party that’s less “evil” ??

Thanks for bringing it up. Same here, I run ACF Pro on a couple of client websites. I don’t get a especially good feeling with this situation.

    I’m wondering the exact same.

I’m running ACF Pro and sadly, I can’t update to this until the Pro features are implemented. Repeater and Gallery are all but required for the website to function at all.

@hirngesicht If you use ACF Pro you don’t use SCF. The Pro version doesn’t rely on the free or basic version. Just use ACF Pro as you did before and ignore the fact that ACF (free) is turned into SCF.

@fl0ri I share your concern I use ACF for most of my clients website and also for my own. The fact that WP/Matt changed the name to SCF and removed WPEngine as developer doesn’t change the way how ACF works. I trust the ACF developer today like I did the last ±15 years. The only thing I did that I upgraded a few ACF free installations to Pro. If you like to use the free version, install the plugin (ones) using the download from the ACF website.

@finalwebsites Oh I know that they are independent plugins officially. However, the official announcement says:

Going forward, Secure Custom Fields is now a non-commercial plugin, and if any developers want to get involved in maintaining and improving it, please get in touch.

And it would strike me as odd that they point out it’s a non-commercial plugin, since the “regular” ACF isn’t commercial.

@hirngesicht All plugins with an possible upgrade to Pro are commercial plugins (like Elementor, Jetpack, All in One Migration, etc.). ACF here at wp.org was also a commercial plugin.
SCF is marked as a non-commercial plugin because there is currently no commercial upgrade.
It’s just how wp.org separates the two different types of plugins.
There is one risk (in the future): If the codebase for SCF changes over time, you might not be able to upgrade to ACF Pro anymore.

    Hi there,

I understand that it is especially challenging to determine the next steps for the ACF Pro version compared to SCF right now, with so many things happening.

Secure Custom Fields is a new plugin. I’m confident that new features and improvements will be added soon.

I personally recommend waiting for new announcements as the version here is the free version, and I know you currently depend on ACF Pro features and don’t have many options.

I believe new options and alternatives will be available in the following weeks as we have more users focusing on this.

@finalwebsites Nothing really wrong with a Commercial plugin, two of the top four featured plugins on .org are from Automattic and they are marked as Commercial. But you are generally correct — the two codebases will drift rather quickly.

@sc0ttkclark I never said that commercial plugins are wrong, I just mentioned that there are two different types. The discussion about the “commercial plugin” label happend some time before ??

@finalwebsites and @foosantos Thanks for the evaluation.
