• Hi All –

I’ve installed a wordpress site and theme I developed for a friend of mine. For some reason, i was able to create an initial set of pages and posts and then when I go to show him how to use the site today, every new page we create doesn’t generate – we get a 404 error. This is the second time it has happened, first when I installed (I had to restart and start from scratch) and now again.

I’m not sure why this is happening, and have a feeling that it has to do with the hosting provider.

Could anyone please help me debug this? or suggest a solution?

    Many thanks in advance!!!!!

  • Hi ddellostritto,

This sounds like an .htaccess issue. Try changing your permalink structure and save the new settings. Then you can change it back to what you currently have for permalink settings and save again.

Please let me know if this fixes the issue or not.

    Hi ChristiNi,

Thanks for the reply. Where would the .htaccess file be found: in my child theme’s directory or the root folder? I’m using Coda and have enabled showing invisible files but the .htaccess file isn’t there….so I’m not sure what to modify.

I tried changing my permalink structure in wordpress from what I normally set it (“/%postname%”) to the default and then back again but still no luck.

    Again, thanks for any help.

    Hi ddellostritto,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this. Did you resolve this issue? Your .htaccess file is usually in your document root (where you installed your WordPress files. Have you tried changing to the default theme and disabling plugins to rule those out as possible causes?
