• I managed to completely break my wordpress site and I’m really hoping someone can help me out!

Currently when you go to my site, instead of seeing the real site, you see the default wordpress site and I cannot login to my wordpress site. I can login as admin on my web server.

I wanted to create a development version of the site using the same database. I read this post and tried to follow it:
    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/making-an-exact-copy-of-a-wordpress-website-on-the-same-server?replies=9

First try: I first created a directory (so https://www.[DOMAIN].com/dev) using my admin login, copied the wordpress files into it, changed wp-config as indicated in the link, created a wordpress login and installed the plug-in that my theme uses.

I got a default website for my theme in the directory and my main site was unchanged.

So I created a subdomain (https://dev.[DOMAIN].com) through my website admin page and changed the wp-config as recommended in the link above. The new dev site loaded something that was almost a copy of my main site with a couple of the colors wrong. My main website was unchanged. But when I tried to login, the login page would hang a while, send me to https://www.[DOMAIN].com/dev’s login area and give me the following error message:

    “The page isn’t redirecting properly

Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete. This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies.”

    So I deleted the https://www.[DOMAIN].com/dev directory. I still couldn’t login to https://dev.[DOMAIN].com/

So I deleted dev.[DOMAIN].com through my admin interface and now I can’t login to my main site and my main site is showing a strange version, unformatted default content version of a default website.

    Please help!!

    Thank you

    UPDATE:

Ok, I fixed this problem by restoring a backup of my website via the admin page of my hosting service. My website is back up, the development sites don’t exist and I can login to my wordpress site.

I still have to figure out how to build a development site without breaking everything, but at least I’m in the same state as I started.
