Problem opening non-wp files in browser (like sitemap.xml). Can you help?

    Hey folks, Hope you’re having a good sunday.
    I have got an issue with openening files and pages in my browser, for instance XXX.html or sitemap.xml (wich is not good for my seo). I hope you can help.

    Several of my sites run on wp and none have this issue.
    That said, all the sites with no problem run on wp 2.9.2 and the new one on 3.0.1. I have already tried setting my site to have www. in the url, which didn’t help. and ftp permissions for the maps and pages are the same as on my other sites.

    So I figure there is some new setting, or glitch in the latest version that prevents non wp files to be openend in ie or any other browser. Can anyone offer support?

    Can you describe the problem in more detail? Do you see an error, just a blank page, do the files download instead of load, etc?

    Hey James, yeah sure. If I manually add files to the ftp, or if plugins, like goole sitemap create files, I can’t open them in my browsers, nor can google open the sitemap for instance. The files are right there on the ftp. And when I download them, they work just fine. It’s just that you can’t open them in the browser.

    Let’s take the example of the sitemap: https://www.herearethegames.com/sitemap.xml (correct link)

    Or the html wp readme file:
    https://www.herearethegames.com/readme.html (correct link)

    The funny thing is, I’ve also got a .txt file on there, that does open.

    Hope this clearifies my problem. Hope you or someone else can help.

    I’m getting a 404 file not found for both, which means that the files are either not there, or your server is misconfigured. If the files are actually there, contact your hosting provider.

    That’s the thing, they are there. I’ll give my hosting company another email then. Cheers James ??

    Thanks forthe help James. Just to let you know and others that may have the same problem. The cause for the problem was in the htacces file on my server.
