• Hi all. I hadn’t updated WordPress for quite some time, and this evening I went to add a new blog post for first time in a while, and although everything appeared fine, I was unable to create any new posts.

So, without thinking I just clicked on the ‘Update to 3.8’ button for an automatic update. It all appeared to go well initially, with a message saying I needed to upgrade my database. I clicked the button to do so and then got the following error message.

WordPress database error: [UPDATE command denied to user 'mylogindetails'@'myhost' for table 'wp_options']
    UPDATE <code>wp_options</code> SET <code>option_value</code> = '1' WHERE <code>option_name</code> = 'link_manager_enabled'

WordPress database error: [UPDATE command denied to user 'mylogindetails'@'myhost' for table 'wp_options']
    UPDATE <code>wp_options</code> SET <code>option_value</code> = '26691' WHERE <code>option_name</code> = 'db_version'

WordPress database error: [UPDATE command denied to user 'mylogindetails'@'myhost' for table 'wp_options']
    UPDATE <code>wp_options</code> SET <code>option_value</code> = '1' WHERE <code>option_name</code> = 'db_upgraded'

Now, here’s the thing. WordPress HAS updated as when I visit my blog I get the new quick links at the top of the screen, however when I try to visit the dashboard I get the same ‘update database’ message followed by this error above, in a constant stuck loop.

Any advice appreciated to help me hopefully fix this! ??

  • Hey Richard,

Have you tried repairing the database? If you go into wp_config and enable wp_allow_repair by adding the following:

    define('WP_ALLOW_REPAIR',true)

After adding that line to your wp_config.php file, access your site using the following link:

    https://yoursite.com/wp-admin/maint/repair.php

You should be able to repair a corrupt database this way. Check out this link as a helping reference:

    Hi Evan,

Thank you for the reply and please accept my apologies for the slow reply. I haven’t had time to address my site issues since I posted this so have only got round to fixing today!

Through some googling, I discovered the issue was my admin account had lost it’s admin rights and I was able to regain access to the site by creating a new admin account in MySQL.

It would appear I have now been able to update the database and get out of the stuck loop I was in.

However, my theme has lost all of it’s customisation in the process so I need to figure out what the issues is there now!
