Problem uploading images – error: Post-processing of the image failed

Interesting. So, since you’ve done tests of the unaltered image (fine) and then edited image (with watermark; not fine),
– can you verify the images are then saved as the same filename?
– What browser are you using to upload the photos? Can you try using a different browser
– Are you uploading via the default WP Media option or are you using a plugin?

We have been using Chrome to upload photos into the WP Media library (not with a plugin) just as we have for the last 10 years! Nothing changed our end.?

As suggested, I tried doing another test in Edge – same pattern. Edited (watermarked) image rejected with same error message: “Post-processing of the image failed likely because the server is busy or does not have enough resources. Uploading a smaller image may help. Suggested maximum size is 2500 pixels.”

I tried a large unedited image (1Mb) and it uploaded into library no problems. I then did another test with two images (one large and unedited except for naming the file but no image resizing or watermarking etc) and the identical image that was resized and watermarked. They had the identical file name and both were rejected in Edge. I uploaded another free stock image (large file) and it went in?fine. Frustrating!

I’ll try Firefox as another test but don’t think this is the issue. Any other ideas?

Any help you can provide is gratefully appreciated. We have to get our company newsletter out ASAP and can’t until this is resolved.?I hope this doesn’t bend your brain too much! It’s doing ours in.

Hi again.

I went looking for past history of your issue and came across this thread on the forums. The link goes to a particular tidbit that may help: renaming the file, making sure no odd characters in it. https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/error-with-image-uploading/#post-13071014

Another point you may need to check, is since you said the issue started with upgrading to WP 5.6, there may be a PHP incompatibility on your server (old version or missing a module). In your Dashboard, go to Tools –> Site Health, and see if there are any issues they recommended you fix.

Lastly, going through the same thread above, there’s a plugin solution that seemed to help others.

Thank you very much for your further reply.

I did read the post link you sent however no-one appears to have the problem that we are having. Most of the issues people have experienced?relate to things like image size, server resources, PHP, file names etc. However?none of the folk on the forum have the problem?we have – which is in fact the absurd situation of being able to import ANY image into WordPress regardless of size. But the moment we add text to the image it will not import – even though it is just a JPEG file – it is simply an amended?version of the original?image.

We have been adding text to images? for ten years now without?any issue whatsoever. It just?makes no sense whatsoever. Even when we name the file the same as the unaltered image, it will not import. Yet, how on earth can WordPress possibly know that text has been placed over the image? After all it is simply a JPEG file. WordPress?neither knows what is in the image nor cares!! And nor should?Wordpress know?that it has even been altered.

We also even?tried to install a File Uploader plugin and once again this would?not u;load the altered image but uploaded the original.

So, at this point, we find ourselves at a dead end and we can no longer upload fresh content to our?site or send out newsletters.

Do you have any suggestions on what actions we could take to resolve? this issue? I did find a plugin which would enable you to lay?text over images?from WITHIN WordPress itself?– but it has not been updated for several years and could cause compatibility issues.

I would welcome your further comments if possible.

I’m also having issues with more recent versions of WP. I’ve settled with 5.5.3 at the moment. We tried updating to 5.6 and 5.6.2 versions with the issue that I couldn’t upload any images (Err;2500px). I didn’t check if image meta data or watermark were in the file or not as mentioned above.

Although I know there are smarter and more experienced people working on WP, I have issues with my theme and they aren’t able to help permanently fix their errors. One resolution was to use Marcus K.’s script to add_filter (wp_kses_allowed_html)…
