I just realized that as a result of the requirement to have the “Anyone can register” check box selected, I have thousands of users registered on my web site as subscribers, and they should not be users on my site. I only want people who register through the business directory to be users. How can I prevent all these “users” from registering on my site (unless they go through the business directory, and how can I delete them without deleting the legitimate users who signed up through the business directory?

    Hi BrownEyesTFC,

Since Business Directory (like many WP plugins) uses the regular WP user mechanism to handle registration, we can’t filter out users who are legitimate listing creators vs. spammers. Once a user gets created, we don’t know without doing a cross-check who posted a listing and who is a spammer. Some queries might be able to tell you that, and if you’re SQL-friendly I can dig something like that up.

There are other plugins that handle user registration issues and try to prevent spammers from signing up in the first place. I’ve tried Stop Spammers on a site with some success, but it also occasionally catches legit users and can make them mad that they can’t sign up either.

One other possibility is that you can have a membership site, where users have to sign up and get approved by you before posting. That’s more work on you, but it does prevent the spammers coming in.

There’s no perfect solution here, unfortunately.
