• Hello again everyone,

One of my viewers just emailed to let me know that he was unable to leave a comment on my blog. I tried clicking on the comment line and keep getting the following error message:

    404 Not Found
The Requested URL Was Not Found on This Server
    Apache Server at theurbangrindblog.com

So if anyone knows how to fix this, I’m all ears.

    Thank you very much!
    Lisa

Ok. I created a blank file in Notepad and saved it as .htaccess. When I went to upload it via Filezilla, it wouldn’t let me drill down as far as the actual file name. What got uploaded as file called Notepad.lnk. Does that sound right to you?

    Thanks again.

wait sorry. Forget I wrote that. Now I think I know what I did. Thanks.

haha no, you should actually be uploading .htaccess. sometimes notepad doenst’ let you save as just .htaccess. so you can save it as “a.htaccess” without the “,and then rename it after you upload it.

Ok. Now I uploaded my .htaccess note pad to the server via filezilla.

    Now what happens? Thanks again.

Now that I uploaded that blank .htaccess notepad file via Filezilla, I can still see it in my root directory. Do I need to make it hidden, then unhide then do the CHMOD thing?

    Thanks.

It got uploaded as a .txt file. Is that ok?

    Lisa

follow the directions in the link posted by Kafkaesqui

you don’t need to unhide it and hide it. the whole idea is that you have it set to view hidden files, hence why you can see the .htaccess file after you upload it. just chmod it to 666, then go update your permalinks again in wp.

no, it should be .htaccess nothing more, nothing less.

Ok. I just did the CHMOD thing, and then tried to updgrade my permalinks. It said I should update my .htaccess file. Then on the bottom of the page they gave me mod-rewrite rules (a bunch of code) to put into my .htaccess file. I take it if I just copy and past that code into my .htaccess file, I’m good to go?

    Thanks,
    Lisa

if everything works correctly, wordpress will write the file itself. try chmodding to 777.

Ok, I tried upgrading my permalinks, then got this code at the bottom of the page, and the screen said to copy and paste it into the .htaccess file. So I did that, and uploaded the revised file via Filezilla, and still I’m getting the same message — “You should update your .htaccess file now.”

So what do I need to do now.

    Thanks.
    Lisa

Not sure what else to tell you. Go over your steps again, and read that link and follow what it says.
