• Hello,

I have quite a strange problem.

I own a site which looks quite old and decided to build a new version. Wanting to keep my site online, I decided to work on anohter domain by copying all the files to a new ftp folder and connecting it with the tables from the old database.

    There are two sites now:
    1. the old one, still working
    2. the new one, in maintenance mode actually: it bases on copies of old files, but for the time of building it works under another domain. So this is the old site, but with another (temporarly) address and a new database (old tables copied to a new db).

Everything works fine, except one thing.
When I post a new article on the old site, it works fine with one exception – it is unable to comment (although commenting is enabled). If I comment an article existing on the old site while I copied it, the comment can be posted, but… it lands on my new site. How is this possible?

Maybe it would be more clear this way:

(old site is A, new site is B)

    1. ftp: A files copied to B folder
    2. A database copied to desktop and then all the tables added to a new, empty database (B), prefixes stayed the same
    3. A site is online now, B also, but in maintenance mode
    4. both A and B are for sure connected with an appropriate databases (wp-config.php)
    5. both DBs are on localhost, having different names
    6. comments posted under old A posts are shown on B (and only there)
    7. comments tried to be posted under a new (afer copying) post on A are unable to be posted
    8. on site B there is no problem

I hope it is written clear for you.

Would be VERY thankful for any ideas how to deal with it.

    Cheers

  • You would be better off using a plugin such as Duplicator to duplicate the site, work on it, then re-upload it.

Keith, thank you, maybe this is a good idea.

But how to rescue my old site?
If I am to duplicate it, the site must be free of problems.

No, the duplicator plugin will install an EXACT copy of the original – problems and all ??

I was just suggesting an easier way to create a new setup for dev work. If you are redesigning a completely new site and just want to export/import all users, posts, pages, etc. maybe you could just create a new setup and use the built in export function from the original site. Then when you get your new setup the way you want it, you can completely delete the original and use the Duplicator plugin to move it to it’s final home URL.
