When I use the Facebook share button, my featured image doesn’t show, just the last image from my post which then seems to be “stuck” as the thumbnail to my share, despite going as far as deleting the photo. I attempted to instead use Publicize to share to see if it worked correctly but it doesn’t share AT ALL even though my settings claim that I am connected to Facebook. I ran my URL through Facebook debugger and didn’t show any errors.

Please help and note that I am a nurse, not a techy. Speak in layman’s terms.

    My site is https://www.wanderingredhead.com

First, could you please try the following to see if it fixes the Publicize issue?

    1. Disconnect your Facebook profile from Settings > Sharing
    2. Disconnect Jetpack
You can disconnect from Jetpack by going to your Jetpack page and scrolling all the way to the bottom and clicking on the “Disconnect from WordPress.com” link.
    3. Remove WordPress from your Facebook Applications. You can do this by going here: https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=applications
From that page, find WordPress and click the “X” next to it to remove it.
    4. Reconnect Jetpack
    5. Reconnect your Facebook profile from Settings > Sharing

If you’re still having the same issue after working through these steps, could you post the full URL of a post or two that are having these problems, including what image URL you’d expect to be shown?

If you want it to remain private, you can also contact us via this contact form:

    Thanks!

This didn’t seem to fix problem. Also when I copy and past a link onto facebook, it puts some random picture, not the featured. On Twitter it is functioning correctly oddly enough.

It looks like your theme is inserting Open Graph meta tags into your header.

When you share a post on Facebook, or when Jetpack Publicize publishes a post to your Facebook page, Facebook crawls the page and looks for Open Graph meta tags in the head to build a complete post preview (with an image, title, description, …).

You can see what Facebook sees by entering one of your posts’ URLs in Facebook Debugger:
    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug

You’re using Yoast SEO for Twitter’s meta tags. Since Yoast is active, Jetpack’s OG tags are automatically deactivated. As there are extra tags being generated – unsure if it’s a third plugin or your theme – it looks like multiple og:image tags are being set (should only be one), and Facebook is most likely picking a random image from the ones listed.

I would recommend finding where in your theme or other plugin is adding those extra tags and instead use Yoast for your Facebook meta data so it posts properly.

Thank you for the reply. I apologize but some of this language is over my head. Can you tell more detailed how exactly I can change my Facebook meta data to Yoast?

You can enable Yoast’s Open Graph Meta Tags by going to SEO > Social > Facebook in your dashboard. To find out more about Open Graph Meta Tags, I’d suggest checking this site:
    https://ogp.me/

However, before you do so you’d need to deactivate the Open Graph Meta Tags that are already being added to your posts, either by another plugin, or by your theme.
I noticed that you’re using the Facebook plugin on your site; it might be worth checking if it includes an option to activate / deactivate Open Graph Meta Tags.
If the tags aren’t added by the Facebook plugin, look at the other plugins on your site, and look at your theme’s options as well to find out what’s managing the Open Graph Meta Tags on your site right now.

    I hope this helps.

I am getting really frustrated with this issue. Open Graph Meta is already activated on my Yoast. I tried deactivating Facebook but same problem still happening.

I am simultaneously talking to Jetpack support. I tried disconnection and reconnecting jetpack, deactivating and reactivating.

I don’t know how to do the last thing on your list….”look at other plugins on your site and look at theme’s options…”

I had this same problem with a previous theme fyi. Not sure it has to do with the theme.

Open Graph Meta is already activated on my Yoast.

That’s good. I can see Yoast’s Open Graph Meta Tags on your site now, and they are good, displaying all the information Facebook needs to build its post previews. Unfortunately, the other Open Graph Meta tags are still there.

As long as you have a duplicate set of tags, Facebook won’t be too happy when browsing your site to get the information it needs to build a post preview. You’ll consequently need to get rid of that second set of tags.

If you already had 2 sets of tags with your previous theme, it might be worth looking at your other active plugins; are there any plugins that may add Open Graph Meta Tags, or that offer Facebook related features that may come with Open Graph Meta Tags. If so, try to deactivate those features, and see if the second set of tag disappears.

You can check the tags in your posts by loading a post in your browser, then doing a right click and viewing the page’s source code. Then, use Ctrl + F (Cmd + F if you are on a Mac) to bring up the in-page search too. You can then search for og: and you will be able to see all the Open Graph Meta Tags in the page. Yoast’s tags are easy to spot: you’ll see this before the tags:
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v3.3.2 - https://yoast.com/wordpress/plugins/seo/ -->

The other set of tags, the one you want to remove is downer on the page.

    I hope this helps.
