• Hi – since upgrading our VPS to FastCGI (was suPHP) we have been consistently having problems with scans never finishing. This is happening with all of our websites. I contacted our server tech support person and gave him access to one of our smaller sites to test himself and this is his response:

From my testing, the PHP process that Wordfence spawns for these scans is stopping within 10 to 15 seconds. In the error log, I am seeing this being logged with the process stops:

    [Wed Dec 07 15:23:31.578734 2016] [fcgid:warn] [pid 22173:tid 140507910948608] (104)Connection reset by peer: [client 69.175.76.254:48772] mod_fcgid: error reading data from FastCGI server, referer: https://drmichaelrouff.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=wordfence_doScan&isFork=0&cronKey=576dfb568a8fdb9405c9e2e
    [Wed Dec 07 15:23:31.578809 2016] [core:error] [pid 22173:tid 140507910948608] [client 69.175.76.254:48772] End of script output before headers: admin-ajax.php, referer: https://drmichaelrouff.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=wordfence_doScan&isFork=0&cronKey=576dfb568a8fdb9405c9e2e

This indicates the script is ending for some reason, but there are no FastCGI settings in place that would be causing the server to end the process so early. As a test I set the PHP handler to suPHP instead of FastCGI, and the wordfence scan on the test site appears to be progressing much further without being killed. The scan is still in progress with active updates after running for a few minutes.

Please re-test this issue on the other affected sites to confirm if they are also working now.

I did test and the sites are now completing the scans, but we obviously do not want to keep using suPHP since it slows everything down and causes an extra strain on the server load. So my question – how to make Wordfence scans finish when using FastCGI? I have already tried all of the suggestions I could find online, including those at https://docs.wordfence.com/en/My_scans_don’t_finish._What_would_cause_that%3F

    No luck so far….

Thanks ahead of time for any help!

  • Hi gjefle,
I’m fairly certain this is a configuration issue of some sort. Are you hosting these sites on a Linux or Windows type operating system?

Some people with similar problems seem to be helped by changing FcgidBusyTimeout. See example here. This site also seems to indicate it could be an issue with permissions. Their situation seems to resemble yours.
