    Hello,

I’ve been playing around with some different themes and I think I’ve found one that will work for me but I can’t figure out how to edit certain parts of it. I’m using the free WordPress theme “Hotel Booking”.

Firstly the homepage: I’ve written content for it, ticked the box to say I want a static homepage, and published it but none of the changes are visible. With the exception of the header bar and navigation links, the homepage looks exactly like the demo page, both in the customizer and on the live site. If I go to ‘pages’ and look at my own homepage, my version is visible. The other pages seem to work okay. I think the problem is with widgets that came with the theme but I can’t figure out where to change or delete them. This leads onto the second problem with widgets in the site that I can’t see in my dashboard to do anything with (such as ‘Categories’ and ‘Archives’ on the sidebar). Where should I be looking for these things?

    Any advice gratefully received!

    Thank you.

  • If I understand your question correctly:
    Go to your /wp-admin/ dashboard.
Then go to Appearance -> Widgets.

This is where you can add / remove widgets.
Themes are not allowed to add demo content anymore, so they can’t pre-populate widgets for you.
The widgets that you are probably seeing are likely to be the default WordPress core widgets. You can remove those from the menu I mentioned.

You should also see if your theme has any documentation and read that.
You can also ask your theme author in their support forum:

    Hi Carike,

Thanks for getting back to me. I looked on the Appearance -> Widgets section but there’s nothing showing there except the widgets I’ve put in.

I’ll ask on the support forum for the theme that you suggested. Thanks for that.

Themes often use default widgets for empty sidebars. You won’t see them since they are in the code. By putting a widget you prefer into the sidebar, the defaults are no longer used.

As for the home page, be sure that you have selected your own page as the home page. If you have, but you still see the demo content, you are using one of those infuriating themes that uses the front-page.php template that basically ignores the content in the page you have selected as home. If so, switch to a different theme, since you are already having such trouble with this one.

Thank you Joy, your tip about the sidebars works fine.

As for the Homepage, you were right, but I posted the problem on the theme’s support page and got the following response which solved it (I’m re-posting the response here in case it helps someone else struggling with the same problem).

    Hi,

    Thanks for contacting us.

If you want to make your homepage like your other pages then first you need to remove the file “front-page.php” in your theme package after it, you need to select template in your homepage (Default Template), please refer to screenshot URL https://prnt.sc/rk30hb

    Thanks

I’m glad you got it worked out. Be aware that any updates to the theme will contain the front-page.php file, so you will have to remove it again.

Thanks Joy, that’s really helpful advice! I’ll try to remember that!
