    Hi,

We have such a weird issue. Every page admin on the site says it needs a meta description. If you look at the source code of each page, the traditional <meta description=”…”> and <meta title=”…”> are missing but the meta OG:description is there. The same is true for Title.

1.? If I resave a page that appears to have no Description, the OG:meta desciption and OG:Title are not removed from the page source.

2.? If I add “Test” as a Description, it does update the the OG:meta information, but does not populate regular meta tags. (https://www.burldaniel.com/insurance-bad-faith-expert-witness/)

    3. I have done the following to try to debug it:

    – Tested by turning off all plugins.? No difference.
    – Switched to Default 2021 theme.? No difference.
    – Enabled WP debug mode.? No errors.
    – Inserted “Test” as a meta description on one page.? It DID change the meta OG:description in the source code
    – Saving a page after an SEO edit takes an EXTRAORDINARY amount of time, over 80 seconds.
    – Disabling Yoast SEO, when making a change and saving page, it takes one second.
    – Reloaded fresh install of Yoast SEO – traditional meta descriptions and title are still empty in page admin and do not show up in the page source.
    – Loaded Troubleshooting plugin.? Disabled all plugins and themes again.? Problem persists.
    – Upgraded to PHP 7.4 – No difference.
    – Restored a backup of WP Core, Theme, Plugins, and database back to before when the last edits were made to Yoast SEO. No difference. (After restoring an old backup, I have since updated all the site plugins and software.)

WP, Themes, and Plugins are and stay up-to-date on a daily basis.`

In all the page admins (with the exceptions I updated today), they say for desciption, “Modify your meta description by editing it here.” but if you view the source code you will see the OG:description but there are no traditional meta tags. Title are populated in the page admin.

I just looked into the database further. `In the wp_yoast_indexable table, all the pages are there, but they all have NULL for the description, with the exception of the ones I updated today.

    Help!`

It is expected that if you’ve no custom meta description specified in the Yoast SEO meta description field for the relevant post/page, then Yoast assessment would alert you to input the meta description. This is expected. However, the OG description will still pull up the relevant description from the post content.

As you experiment by putting the “Test” in meta description does show on the page source, we also confirmed it by checking the page’s source of this example post. See reference: https://tinyurl.com/ye2ormy8

Having said that, make sure you’ve run SEO Data Optimization from SEO >> Tools. This will greatly help in the optimization of SEO data and thereby improves site loading and performance on the backend.

I hope you find this information helpful. Please, let us know if you’ve any further questions.

I guess what I failed to mention is that every page in the site previously had content in the descriptions that was custom-written. At some point, it all went away.

Have you had any experience with why all the content in the description table would get wiped?

Here is the meta data from a page I didn’t fix:
