• Hi,

I wanted to move my WP website from barbaramilavec.com/wp to barbaramilavec.com and didn’t read any instructions, thought I just have to change the addresses in “WordPress address (URL)” and “Site address (URL)” and that it would be easy…

So now I can’t login cause I get an error message and my WP site is a mess but it looks like I could just follow these steps now (thanks Samuel B for posting this link and sorry I forgot about it!)
    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Moving_WordPress#Moving_WordPress_Within_Your_Site

    1. But I get confused already with the 1st step; where do I create the new location and what exactly does that mean? A new folder in my File Manager? No matter where?

    2. Except for the root directory staying “clearer”, is there any practical difference between the 1st and 2nd option of the first step?

    3. If I understand well, I should then move EVERYTHING that’s in my WP folder? Just wanna be sure I don’t mess up even more…

    4. It seems like I don’t have a .htaccess file, I checked with “showing hidden files” option but I can’t find it. Does it matter?

    5. At the moment, my WP folder is in the “public_html” folder which is in the root. Does that mean that this is already done for me?

    (I didn’t install WP myself)

    Thanks in advance for help.

  • 1. If you want to move to barbaramilavec.com, don’t create any directory. Move all the files to public_html directory.

    2. Step 1 is moving wordpress to another directory such as barbaramilavec.com/blog.

    3. Move all files to public_html directory.

    4. It should be there. Look again!

    5. The root directory is public_html. Select all files and move them to public_html.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

I’ll look again for the .htaccess file, even though I’m not sure what more can I do…

    Are you sure that it should be there? I read it depends on the server, if it’s a Windows server, there’s no .htaccess file;
    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/cant-find-htaccess-file?replies=4
    or that it depends on the host;
    https://www.freewebmasterhelp.com/tutorials/htaccess

These are my host’s servers, I don’t know if they’re Windows servers or not…

    HP DL380 G5
    2x Quad-Core Xeon E5420
    24 GB RAM
    1x 72 GB SAS Disk
    7x 146 GB SAS Diskov v RAID 5 polju
    VmWare ESXi 4.1

    and

    HP DL380 G6
    2x Quad-Core Xeon E5520
    48 GB RAM
    6x 300 GB SAS Diskov v RAID 10 polju
    VmWare ESXi 4.1

in response to your question, there should be a .htaccess file in your wordpress folder in your filemanager

I scanned directory for .htaccess file and it found two but in the cms directory which is separated from WP (not in it) and those files were last modified in 2009 (I installed WP only about a month ago) so I’m guessing it has nothing to do with WP… but it means my host supports them which makes it weird why I don’t find the WP .htaccess file.
Not sure since when the cms directory is there and why… I’ll ask the guy who put up my first site.

    1. Does it matter if I don’t have the .htaccess file?

    2. I moved all files to public_html but the old site is still up, nothing changed. What else should I do? Or is the .htaccess file the only problem now?

My old site is in a separate folder, also in barbaramilavec.com/public_html directory.

I moved all the files back to where they were; in barbaramilavec/public_html directory in a folder called WP which then appears as barbaramilavec.com/wp

Like I said in my previous post, my current/old website is in a folder in public_html directory and I would rather keep that directory organized and not put WP files in there directly. Moving them to public_html didn’t make it work anyway.

So, can I keep them in my WP folder and change the URL (make it appear on barbaramilavec.com instead of barbaramilavec.com/wp)?

Help please, I’m stuck, I don’t know where to search anymore!
