    Hi,
    My WordPress website is https://www.tourtheuk.co.uk
I am running WP 4.0.1 and when I upgraded to this, so many things were broken… took ages to sort it all out.
I am getting virtually no visitors although if I enter the web address in Google, then the site comes up… as you’d expect.
When the site was set up, I think WP gave it a title ‘tourtheukcouk’ and some time later I changed it to Tour the UK.
    This also happens… which I think is a problem…
If I enter ‘tour the uk’ into google … then the website is nowhere to be seen… please note the spaces between the words.
But if I enter ‘tourtheuk’ into google … then the website comes up on the first page … along with other pages from the site…. please note there are no spaces between the words.
Also, I have only just added a sitemap onto google webmaster tools so I am not sure if google has indexed the site with its previous ‘tourtheukcouk’ title or what.
Could all this be the reason I’m not seen in google?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
The theme in use is the CyberChimps Business pro 3, and amongst the plugins are AllinOne SEO Pack and Jetpack (although I don’t think this is set up properly yet).
As you have probably guessed, I am relatively new to WP and am not very techie.
    Thanks for any help.
    David

  • I changed it to Tour the UK

    Where did you change this?

If I enter ‘tour the uk’ into google … then the website is nowhere to be seen

And how long has your site been up?

    Hi kmessinger,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

It’s several months now that I changed the title here

    Settings/general/site title

and I think it was quite a few weeks before that when the site went up.

I changed it from what WP seemed to put in automatically(?) as ‘tourtheukcouk’ to ‘tour the UK’.

I thought no more of it till reviewing the site.

All the search engines that I have tried seem to return good results (first page) if I enter ‘tourtheuk’ but nothing when I enter ‘tour the uk’.

I have the impression (rightly or wrongly) that the site has been indexed by google with the old ‘tourtheukcouk’ title and not been looked at since it was changed.

Any help or advice would save my sanity.

    Regards,
    David

    You are indexed by Google
    https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site:www.tourtheuk.co.uk&gws_rd=ssl

You are not indexed by Bing yet.

Changing the name puts the right name in the browser tab but will a search for Tour the UK ever lead directly to your site? Probably not. It is such a generic and well used term that it is almost impossible to pop to the top unless you pay. With SEO assistance, after time you will move up. My site has been there for years and has hundreds of posts, and data and I don’t have a generic name so I come right up.

BTW, it looks like the name is Tour the uk?

    Hi kmessinger,

Thanks for the info and assistance.

I can understand what you are saying re being a bit generic but I still don’t understand why there is such a difference when I search for “tourtheuk” and it comes up on the first page??

Could there be another problem on the site that we are just not seeing??

Seems very strange to come up on page 1 with one expression and to be no-where with the one that matches the title, description and keywords.

With the “tourtheuk” search term, I even get the google map come up.

As you can see… I’m definitely not techie … probobly to the point of being a pain … but thanks for you patience and advice.

    David

That’s not an expression, it is your url so it is a direct match for a search engine.
