• I recently installed WP and everything was working fine. Suddenly one day when I open the blog in IE, I get the message – “It doesn’t look like you’ve installed WP yet. Try running install.php”.

This happened sometime before and once I re-installed WP, I lost my posts. Now it has re-occured. I would appreciate if someone could advice/help on this issue. Thanks.

  • Check your DB if the tables exist.

If your blog was working fine and suddenly this is showing up, then it sounds like your webhost is having problems.

Thanks for the reply XeroCool. I have just checked my DB. Surprisingly nothing exists there. But I can assure you that the blog was up and running not more than 12 hours ago. Any suggestions?

Thanks Manzabar. Yeah looks like I have a problem with the webhost. I will have a word or two with them.

    Change your passwords more frequently.

I can’t say that your problem was caused by your hosting account or database being hacked, but it’s always a good idea to keep passwords fresh anyway.

I’m with Manzabar. Over the years I have learned several things about web hosts and one of them is this:

    1. The crappy ones don’t backup your site at all.
    2. The better ones actually do backup your site, but not all that often. Plus, they will restore a backup at will without telling you. All of a sudden your site is 3 days behind where it was a moment ago. Still better than host type #1.
    3. The best ones backup your site daily and incrementally. Then, if they have to restore it, they restore only the increments required. Thus, the fact that a restore has been done is (most of the time) invisible to you. The best of a bad set of option.

So, I think you have a #2 type of host who is in the habit of restoring several day old backups when something goes wrong. I would recommend checking your hosts website for something like a ‘network status’ page. You may be able to read what has happened over the last few days and see that indeed a server went down and a backup was restored.

Thanks Heatsink. I have been keeping in touch with my webhost. They do claim a daily back-up. Once the issue resolves, I will reply in detail which might benefit anyone in the future.

Do we need to take a regular back-up of wordpress ourselves?

    backups are your friend.

I make sure, after I make any changes to any of my websites, I save it to my hard drive at home.

my hard drive has a set of folders/directories setup exactly the same way my sites are. Easier to find things that way.

I know most folks do backups, but I like to mention it form time to time.

My my webhost does backup domains, but its always good to have my own backup.
