• I recently updated to 3.9.1 and I’m having a lot of interface problems. In addition, I’m continuously being told to re-install 3.9.1, which I keep doing, but an error message keeps popping up after the re-install.
    I’ve deactivated all plug ins and now my website looks terrible.

    How can I just go back to 3.9? This is a time sensitive issue, please help!
    thanks.

    I’m having a lot of interface problems.

    – What kind of problems?

    – Check the error logs on your server for a more specific error message. If you need help locating them, ask your hosting provider to help you with that.

    My dashboard and edit/post screens are all white, some kind of odd shell of a screen. I just changed themes and it hasn’t solved the problems. I’ve deactivated all plug ins and that hasn’t solved anything. With the installation of 3.9.1, everything is screwed up.

    Have you tried:

    – switching to the unedited default, core-bundled Theme (such as Twenty Fourteen) for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue.
    resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems (because the hooks remain unless plugins completely removed or some plugins stick around in cached files. So by renaming the folder, you break them and force them inactive).
    MANUALLY re-uploading all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones. Read the Manual Update directions first!
    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php
    BTW, if you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong. It’s a great safety net.

    I apologize for sending this through your discussion, but can’t find a way to start my own and my problem started after I updated as well. When I tried to open my site (and then my dashboard) today, this is what I got:
    Fatal error: Call-time pass-by-reference has been removed in /home/sskerns1st/sandrakerns.com/wp-content/plugins/like-button-plugin-for-wordpress/include/fb_meta.php on line 169

    I can’t even get to my dashboard to fix anything. If I can’t get there, how am I supposed to fix a problem?

    I switched to twenty fourteen, nothing changed. I switched back to twenty twelve.

    I’m not sure how to manually re-upload files…what’s this all about? And how do I backup everything?

    Sandra I’m in the same boat….I just want to undo the upgrade. I’ll likely never upgrade again because of this.

    @sandra@sandrakerns.com:
    Despite any similarity in symptoms, your issue is likely to be completely different because of possible differences in physical servers, accounts, hosts, plugins, theme, configurations, etc. To get the best attention to your specific issue as you deserve, please review how and where to post in this forum: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Forum_Welcome#Where_To_Post

    @dd0519:

    As I suggested in my first reply, did check the error logs on your server for a more specific error message. If you need help locating them, ask your hosting provider to help you with that.

    Sandra, this link should permit you to start your own topic.

    The link that tara posted should be good though.

    Tara,

    The error log simply said to try again later and that’s the only message I’ve gotten since I originally upgraded. Am I supposed to download PhpMyAdmin? My dashboard is pretty much a blank white screen and I can’t really do much of anything. I just want to undo this upgrade. Can I do that? I really don’t know what to do here aside from switching hosts.

    I’m sorry I’m just really tripped up on the instructions to manually update WordPress.

    “Delete the old wp-includes and wp-admin directories on your web host (through your FTP or shell access).”

    How am I supposed to do the above instructions? This is relatively new to me, so the instructions in the link aren’t too helpful. And my dashboard is pretty much a blank white screen that came about after the auto install of 3.9.1. I can’t actually do anything.

    Service Error: There was a problem getting the configuration information. Please try again later.

    The above is the exact service error I get. Is there a Help Line I can call when this support forum can’t help to solve my issue? I don’t think I can manually update my wordpress…the instructions seem to fit someone who isn’t having the problems I’m having.

    @dd0519 – Since the issue came from upgrading WordPress core, there is a possibility something did not install correctly. This is why the main suggestion is to reinstall it (following those instructions closely, as to not overwrite wp-content or wp-config.php).

    This can narrow down the issue and potentially resolve it right there. If you do not feel comfortable doing this yourself, perhaps you should look into hiring a developer to lend a hand.

    Your host should be able to provide you with FTP access, there are plenty of free FTP clients out there to use such as Filezilla.

    Okay, I started a new discussion, thanks for the link. I don’t hold out much hope in getting an answer, since no one here has had suggestions.
