• Dear all,

I’m sure this question comes up a lot, so if this ends up with a redirection to a previous post, I would still appreciate it.

I’m trying to quickly and simply transfer my free wordpress.com website to a new domain which I own. I have followed the instructions for exporting and importing the XML file to get the content to the new website. All of the content arrives at the other end (I’ve uploaded the theme as well, so that’s the same), but my menus, header image and widgets are not at all in the right places.

Here is the original wordpress.com website: https://storefrontcity.wordpress.com/
and here is the result of the import: https://chicago.storefrontcity.net/.

How can I resolve this problem? My very best and hope to hear from you soon.

  • You’ll need to bring your images over as a start.

The you need to set your widgets up again.

look in Dashboard>appearance>widgets to see how they’re set up..

I’d set up two browsers, one with the old dashboard and one with the new, and just flip between them, setting the new site up to match the old.

There may be some theme settings you need to crib as well – dashboard>appearance>themes.

Thank you for your help with this. I’ve now sorted out the widgets and I think I can manage the header image. The only issue I seem to be coming up against now is a menu error. Although I have a header menu on the original site, when I try to set up one on the www.ads-software.com site it tells me:

“Your theme does not natively support menus, but you can use them in sidebars by adding a “Custom Menus” widget on the Widgets screen.”

From widgets, I can only create sidebar menus. Any way to edit the code to get around this?

Sorry, but how do you get that error message

ie from the dashboard what are you selecting?

The error appears when I navigate to Appearance > Menus. It is in a light yellow box just below the “Edit Menus” tab at the top of the screen.

Any ideas on how to allow this theme to support menus like it did on wordpress.com?

WordPress.COM and .ORG usually don’t have identical versions of the same theme.

It looks like the .ORG version of the theme is quite outdated and no longer supported:

You really may want to consider finding a current theme that’s maintained and supported.

It may be possible to add custom menus – but it requires some coding:

Is there a way for me to downgrade my wordpress install version, thus allowing the old theme to be compatible?

Essentially, branding necessitates the preservation of the current website in the form we have now. I was attempting to use WP Clone, although I’m quite sure it will be of no use since I cannot install plugins on WordPress.com. Is there a workaround here, or do we really need to choose another theme?

Using an outdated version of WP is a major security risk so it’s not recommended at all. Getting hacked would do much more damage than a new theme :).

In this case, downgrading wouldn’t fix the problem – if the .ORG version of the theme doesn’t have custom menus, it never has.

WordPress.COM themes are available in SVN – here’s that one:

See this link as to how to use SVN:

That said, do know that theme-specific support on www.ads-software.com will be very limited for a theme not from this site…https://www.ads-software.com/themes/ as those are the themes supported here.
