Problems with display:block

I’ve used the display:block in the sidebar to make a background appear when hovering over the links. The problem is that the links don’t stay on the same line since the blocks can’t fit in there because of the bullets before the links or the post numbers after the links. Can I fix this in some way or do I have to use another method? I don’t want the background to be only behind the text, I want it to be behind the whole line, and equally long behind all links.
