Problems with footer

I am trying to work on setting up the footer and in the example the gallery, quick links and Bio (About) are all approx the same size and line up along the bottom of the website, but when I follow the instructions in the widgets section they do not display as in the shown example I am following from the theme instructions
The theme is VW Writer
