Problems with IE and category base

  • I’m using WP as a CMS using the static front page plug-in at mycruiseplanner.net .

    What I want to do is use the category base (/news) permalink to display all posts in all but 2 categories. I’ve built the index.php to exclude the categories I don’t want and in FF and Safari, it works great. In IE 6 & 7 it gives a 404 error.

    I’ve quadruple checked my .htaccess rules and have tried everything else that I can think of twice (removed permalinks, different navigation structure).

    I can reproduce this error in FireFox too if I have a 404.php in my theme.

    Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
